Nature, the Feeling.
There are many ways to define the word “Nature”. Is it the essential qualities by which something is recognized, or is it the natural physical world including plants, animals and landscapes. When I think of “nature” I think of the word natura, which is a Latin translation of the Greek word physis, which related to the characteristics of plants and animals. This is the definition in which most people think of nature.
Henry David Thoreau wrote in his novel “Walden”, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Is that “nature”? Nature to me is more than a word; it is a mindset, a feeling. It covers more of the senses than of actual concrete facts to learn about. This is why it is so hard to comprehend or give a definite answer to.
Kate Soper wrote in her novel “What is Nature?” that the term of “nature”, refers to everything which is not human and distinguished from the work of humanity, I disagree. I believe that humanity correlates with nature whenever we are drawn in by it, with our senses. For example, when I picture nature, I think of backpacking through a rainforest. I picture radiant beams of light shining down through the trees. I hear monkeys and birds all around. I feel at peace with everything around me. In this state of relaxation, of total serenity, I believe that humanity is slightly connected with “nature”.
I am not a very “outdoorsy” person, but when I went to Costa Rica and back packed through the rainforest, I realized that I did not have to be a nature freak to be one with nature. I remember trekking through dense jungle, looking at exotic plants and animals, and becoming one with nature on this escapade through the jungle. Every time I think about what nature is and how it has affected me, I think about this moment. I think about the adrenaline rush of zip lining through the canopies, not knowing what is looking at me through the trees.
If you look at nature what would you see, or would you close your eyes and not see anything, but listen and try to become one with nature? Today we usually zone out how we feel and the things around us and usually forget about how amazing nature is. I try every day to become one with nature, all you need is a few minutes every day.
